Mindbody vs Momence: which one fits your yoga studio?

The short answer: choose Mindbody if you want its app to help new students find you, or if you run several locations. Choose Momence if your students already come through your own site, your email list, and word of mouth, and you want a cleaner, more modern system.

Teaching on your own or running a very small studio? Both are big and expensive, so they’re likely not the right fit.

A note on where I stand. Kavi doesn’t sell booking software, and neither company pays us. I build websites for wellness practitioners, and I’ve connected both of these. The Yoga Hive in New Jersey runs on Mindbody, and I’ve worked with a client on Momence.

How much does Mindbody cost per month?

Mindbody’s pricing page says “starting at $99 USD/month per location,” while the FAQ on the same page gives $79. It doesn’t explain the difference, so ask. The Starter, Accelerate, and Ultimate plans each lead to a sales conversation, and exact card rates aren’t published.

Two things in Mindbody’s favor: it says there’s no onboarding fee on any plan, and every plan includes unlimited users per location. Moving your data over may carry a fee, and add-ons like the branded app are priced separately.

How much does Momence cost per month?

Momence doesn’t say. Its pricing page offers a demo and “pricing that fits.” You’ll find low figures online, including one competitor listing plans from $0 to $199 a month. Those seem too low to me.

One client I’ve worked with averaged around $300 a month, mostly on entry-level pricing. That’s one studio and not an exact figure, but it’s closer to what I’d plan for. Another competitor, Vibefam, cites Capterra reviewers reporting $250 to $2,000 or more.

Also ask whether a percentage fee sits on top of your plan. On $10,000 a month in online sales, a 5% fee is $500, before card processing.

Which one is nicer to use?

Momence, for me. Mindbody has been around for so long that it feels patched together, with new features added over the years. Its back end isn’t especially clean or intuitive.

Momence is newer, so much of what it does was planned up front. It’s very clean, and it feels more thought through.

Does Mindbody actually bring you new students?

It can, and this is the real difference between the two. The Mindbody app is genuinely good. I’ve been in studios where students learned about the class through the app, so some people arrive already knowing you. Momence doesn’t have an equivalent.

The fee is small and one time per new client. A $20 drop-in costs you $4. A $200 class pack hits the cap, so it costs you $30. Later bookings from that student are commission-free.

So the useful question is where your new students come from today. If it’s mostly friends, Instagram, and your own site, a marketplace may change little. If your studio is new to the area, it could be worth a lot.

Which is easier to put on your own website?

Neither is hard. I connected Mindbody for The Yoga Hive, and it was very easy. Momence is a very similar process. You customize the schedule, choose your colors, and a simple embed code does the rest.

The difference shows up at checkout. On Mindbody, linking to a product is a little clunky, and it isn’t the best interface. Momence is better, but also not great.

Two things to check. Mindbody’s class list widget only shows the next 30 days, and Mindbody notes that its widget scripts are often flagged by page speed tests. And Vibefam reports operators saying Momence requires a link back to momence.com from your site, so ask.

Who should choose which?

Mindbody fits if

  • You want its app bringing people to you, alongside your own marketing.
  • You run more than one location, or plan to.
  • You have several teachers and want unlimited logins in writing.

Momence fits if

  • Your students already find you without a marketplace.
  • A clean, modern system matters to you and your team.
  • You’re comfortable getting a custom quote and comparing it line by line.

Neither fits if

  • You teach on your own, or run a very small studio.
  • You don’t need memberships, class packs, or a staff schedule.

What about a small studio or a solo teacher?

For a smaller studio, look at Rezerv. It’s a Singapore company, so it’s more popular in Southeast Asia, and it connects to online payment providers there, along with Stripe and PayPal. Chan uses it for Heart Studio in Da Nang. It’s available in the US too, and it can be a good option on a smaller budget. Its plans are listed on its website, in your local currency, with a 1-month free trial.

For a solo teacher, Kavi’s built-in schedule is made for that case. You edit it yourself, and you can take payment through your own Stripe account. See how a done-for-you website works, including who does what.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. What’s the full monthly price, with every add-on I’d use?
  2. What are the card rate and any platform fee, in writing?
  3. How long is the contract, and how much notice does canceling take?
  4. How do I get my client list and purchase history out if I leave?
  5. Does my website have to link back to you?
  6. How many text messages are included, and what do extras cost?

Common questions

Is Momence cheaper than Mindbody?

Don't assume it is. Momence doesn't publish its prices, and the low figures you'll see online looked too low to me. One client I've worked with averaged around $300 a month, mostly on entry-level pricing. Compare written quotes using your own monthly sales.

Does Mindbody get you new students?

It can. I've been in studios where students found the class through the Mindbody app. A listing is free, and Mindbody charges 20% of a new client's first purchase through the app, capped at $30. Later bookings from that client are commission-free. How many students it brings depends on your area, and no one can promise a number.

Is Mindbody worth it for a small yoga studio?

For a very small studio, probably not. Mindbody and Momence are both big, expensive systems. If new students are your biggest need and you can carry the cost, the app is a real benefit. Otherwise, look at something smaller like Rezerv.

Can I put Mindbody or Momence on my own website?

Yes, and it's simple. I've done both. You customize the schedule, choose your colors, and add an embed code to your site.

Do I need either one if I teach on my own?

Probably not. Both are big and expensive for one person. If you teach a handful of weekly classes and don't sell memberships or class packs, a simpler schedule and a way to take payment may be enough. Kavi sites include one for solo teachers.
